It’s completely normal to feel a mix of nerves and anticipation before a procedure. One of the best ways to ease that anxiety is simply knowing what to expect. Here is a straightforward walkthrough of how your procedure day will go at our practice.
The Night Before
Your preparation actually begins the evening before. Follow any fasting instructions you have been given — typically no food or drink after midnight. Lay out comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, and make sure you have arranged a trusted person to drive you home. Do not plan to drive yourself under any circumstances.
Arriving at the Office
Plan to arrive at least 15 to 20 minutes before your scheduled time. This allows you to check in, complete any remaining paperwork, and get settled without feeling rushed. Bring a valid photo ID, your insurance card, and a list of any current medications.
Before the Procedure Begins
A member of our clinical team will greet you, review your medical history, and walk you through exactly what is about to happen. This is a great time to ask any last-minute questions — no question is too small. We want you to feel fully informed before we begin.
During the Procedure
Dr. Maher and his team will keep you as comfortable as possible throughout. Depending on the type of procedure, you may be awake, lightly sedated, or under local anesthesia. The duration varies, but our team will give you a realistic time estimate during your pre-procedure consultation.
Immediately After
Once the procedure is complete, you will be moved to a recovery area where staff will monitor you and make sure you are stable and comfortable. You will receive written post-operative instructions before you leave — please read them carefully and keep them somewhere accessible.
Going Home
Most patients are able to go home the same day. Your designated driver will be called when you are ready. Rest is strongly encouraged for the remainder of the day. Avoid making important decisions or signing documents in the first 24 hours if sedation was used.
If you have any concerns once you are home, do not hesitate to call our office. We would rather you call and find out everything is fine than stay silent about something that needs attention.
